Radon gas can enter a building anywhere it is in contact with the ground, which means that any building can have Radon: new and old buildings, well-sealed and drafty buildings, buildings with or without a basement, your home, your office, and even your kid’s school.
The EPA estimates that one in five US schools has at least one schoolroom with a Radon level above the action level of 4 pCi/L (picoCuries per liter).For most school children and staff, the second largest contributor to their Radon exposure is likely to be their school. In an effort to mitigate the harmful effects of long term Radon exposure, the Vermont Legislature has enacted Act 72, Section 12.
Under this Act, schools must follow the ANSI/AARST protocol for conducting measurements of Radon in schools and large buildings, which includes hiring a certified Radon measurement professional. The deadline for all schools to complete this testing is June 30th of 2023.
When hiring a Radon Measurement Professional, make sure they are certified by the National Radon Proficiency Program (NRPP) and have experience following the protocol for Radon testing in schools and large buildings.
